The Performax Story: From humble beginnings ... (includes a great photo story)
The town of Gympie, which history buffs will know, saved Queensland from bankruptcy back in the 1860’s. It suffered severely from drought and the fall in wool prices, but when James Nash discovery started the famous Gympie Gold Rush, the town’s and Queensland’s worries were over. Some 120 years later two local Gympie mates, with their love of Chevrolet Corvette’s, had no idea that their passion and hobby would turn into a little gold mine of its own. It’s another Gympie and Queensland success story.
If Perth airfare prices back in the 80’s hadn’t been so expensive, there may not have been a story to tell … at least probably not this one. Instead of holidaying in Perth as was originally planned, Brian Learoyd and Greg Waters decided to change their plans and bought a much better value Around-the-World ticket, which also brought them to America.
Maybe it was fate… because that’s where they fell in love with the country’s iconic muscle car, the Corvette, and their success story, at the time unbeknown to them, began. They promptly bought and imported their first vehicles to Australia, where the search commenced to find someone to complete the conversion to Right Hand Drive. The quality of work that they found made them realise that they could do a whole lot better themselves. Both had mechanical backgrounds and set upon the task of pulling their cars apart and went about learning and perfecting the process the hard way. Their projects of passion were well worth the hard work. Other Corvette fans soon began to notice the quality of their vehicle’s conversions. Before they knew it, the demand from others to convert their cars was so great that they realised they could actually turn their passion and hobby into a business. They took the necessary steps and founded Corvette Queensland in 1989, with Brian the first to give up his full time job and Greg soon following. And the rest is history, as they say.
The company has gone from strength to strength and has been the driver that pioneered the modern conversion process. After securing a contract to supply the Victorian Ambulance Service, the company soon diverged into supplying Chevrolet and GMC pick-ups. With the government’s introduction of a Government regulated industry, Performax began to acquire accreditation for a wide range of other vehicles, which today includes Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Corvette & Camaro, GMC Sierra & Denali, Hummer H2, Ford Mustang and Plymouth Prowler. In 2007 the company was rebranded as Performax International to reflect the diversity of its performance vehicle range. It remains the leading importer, converter and retailer of American performance vehicles and enjoys the trust and support from V8 Supercar greats such as Russell Ingall, Lee Holdsworth, Jamie Whincup and Kevin Bartlett.
“Over the years many well-known motoring journalist have come to visit us, see what we do and test drive our vehicles and we’re proud to say that we have had nothing but highly positive reviews,” Glenn Soper, who was appointed as GM in February 2010, reported.
The hugely popular TV series Top Gear had a policy of not featuring any converted cars … that is until they saw and experienced a ‘Performax Conversion’. They featured the Performax Corvette ZR1 on their program in October 2010.
2010/11 saw further major challenges mastered, achievements and goals reached. A 2500m2 new state-of- the-art conversion facility was opened in November 2010. The dedicated Silverado production line produces one OEM comparable Chevrolet Silverado each day, as well as the highest number of other conversions in the country. Performax meanwhile employs almost 70 staff members, of which 50%, at any given time, are undergoing further training/studies to constantly increase their qualifications. In July 2011 Performax International won the Regional Employer of the Year Award. Due to customer demand, the company expanded its representation and now has agents in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia and the ACT. Technical milestones included the development of a new electric-assisted power steering system for the RHD Mustang that faithfully replicates the performance and feel of the LHD factory original. The Performax system, developed at a six-figure cost, immediately attracted export interest from Mustang importers in other RHD countries, including South Africa. General Manager Glenn Soper said the steering system was another example of “the Performax Difference”, which sets the company apart from other conversion operations.
In 2012 the Toyota Tundra, Dodge RAM and Ford F-Trucks will be added to the Performax stable of vehicles. The Toyota Tundra will be the first off the block this year. Then by mid-year Performax expects to have compliance for the Dodge RAM. The F-Trucks, the company hopes to get on line in the 2nd half of 2012. Performax International expects to double its annual turn-over by 2015.
Our ‘hero product’ remains the Chevrolet Silverado, GM Glenn Soper reported. This 4WD V8 Turbo Diesel is such a diverse vehicle that it is attractive to so many different people. With its unparalleled power, unexpected efficiency and the most smoothest and comfortable ride in its class, we have customers from the mining sector, agricultural, equestrian and building & construction sectors to leisure clients such as caravanners and boaties who just want the immense towing power the Silverado can offer them. We’re seeing an increase in female driven sales lately as well, as women realise how easy the Silverado is to drive and handle despite its size and power, deeming it an extremely comfortable, safe and flexible family vehicle. It really is the ultimate work and play vehicle, whether you’re driving in the city, country or outback. See photo story 1989-2012.
